How to user the Barcode scanner (tutorial)

A lot of people have asked for a tutorial on how to use, and find, the barcode scanner. Here you go:

1. You start off in the diary, and tap on the fork & knife button

2. Pick meal type


3. Tap on ”Scan barcode”

4. Hold the barcode in front of the camera


5. Add amount and save to diary
You have now successfully scanned and added food to your diary!

  1. A popular discounter in Austria uses the same EAN for more than one product (e.g. “normal” Cottage Cheese and Cottage Cheese light – same price, same EAN).
    I have already discovered that scanning a code returned a product, however it was not the right one.
    As I think this problem might occur more often, it should be solved somehow. Now, there correct product cannot be added because the EAN is already in use.

    • Hi!

      We have now talked to (GS1) http://www.gs1.org/ about this and the same EAN code should never be used for different products. So it seems like the discounter in Austria is not using EAN codes correct. This should not be a common problem I hope. Thanks for reporting this issue!

  2. I’ve got an enhancement request:

    When scanning a bar code and the product isn’t found, one should be able to create the food for the bar code instantly.

    Right now you have to cancel the whole bar code workflow, go create the food, sync, and hope that the food appears on the data base next time you scan the bar code. The current workflow includes a lot of useless steps.

  3. a lot of the food I scan in Australia doesn’t come up either, I have made a few foods they save in my foods, sorry but don’t have much time to do all of them. also my computer is not syncing to my phone. I create a menu or food on the computer then I have to re enter it to my phone, I have a HTC 1x

    • Hi! Please send us an error report from within your app and we will have a closer look at your problem.

      How to send an error report:
      – Open the app
      – Tap on the Profile tab in the tab bar
      – Click on the button “Info and help” in the upper right corner
      – Tap on “Report error”
      – Enter your email address
      – Describe the problem in the bottom box
      – Send to ShapeUp Club by pressing on the button upper right corner
